Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
According to the Google dictionary a lamp is a device for giving light
Or
Any device for producing light or sometimes heat
While light is defined as a natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible
Or
Something that makes vision possible
Elaboration on verse given above
1. The lamp and light being referred to in the verse above is the bible.
The bible as a light
2. The bible is described as a light because it helps christians take good decisions
– In times when situations and circumstances makes it difficult to know which direction to take
– For example you are making preparation for a major examination
a) Your textbooks and notes suddenly get missing
b) Do you also steal someone’s just as yours has been stolen? It seems fair, or?
3. But the Bible says in
Deuteronomy 5:19
Neither shall thou steal
Meaning do not steal or take what does not belong to you
– What do you do then?
Psalm 119:133 says
Order my steps in the word: and let not iniquity have dominion over me
And
Matthew 7:7 says
Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be open unto you
The direction given in two verses quoted above
4. Àsk God to give you a friend who does better in class and has not lost textbooks or notes
– After prayer talk to one of your friends and you will be surprised at how willing and helpful the friend is
5. The Bible in the story above has been your light in helping you know what to do
The bible as a lamp
1. A lamp has two functions
– Gives light
– And gives heat that can keep you warm when it is cold.
2. How can the bible be a lamp to us?
A- God’s word served as a light so we do not stumble in our walk
– To be obedient to Him and His laws
B. The phrase ” God’s word is a lamp to my feet”is a metaphorical statement
– Meant to emphasize that comes from following God’s instructions
Conclusion
Let’s allow the word of God to guide and direct us in all we do always
