ORDER MY STEPS
ORDER MY STEPS
By Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
Let’s compare two other translations of the verse above:
The good news Translation says
As you have promised keep me from falling; do not let me be overcome with evil.
The New living translation says;
Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil.
If I am to simplify the verse above from the king James version based on the two other contemporary translations, I will say;
Direct every decision or move I make by your words as you have promised. Do not let me be controlled or overcome with evil.
What must we do for God to fulfill His promise? We must:
Submit our will and desires to God
John 15:17 proverbs 3:5-6
Pray for God’s will to be done
Matthew 26:39
2 Samuel 10:12
2 Samuel 15:26
Study the word
2 Timothy 2:15
Psalm 119:11
Submit Our Will And Desires To God
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thy own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
If you want God to order your steps, then you have to trust Him completely. Do not insist on having or requesting for things you like as a person. Learn to pray and ask for God’s will to be done and not yours.
For instance, you are a young man or woman thinking about what career to choose. Should you insist that you become a lawyer because you are good in literature and history and you like the way lawyers dress and operate at the law courts. You have also heard that their income levels are very high. having the love and academic ability for a profession is important when making or choosing your career. However, God knows best and His will and plans for our lives is better than whatever desire or dream we have.
In choosing a profession, you could tell God t direct you, Lord I know I have the academic ability to become a lawyer, I love the profession and I love the income levels attached. However, not as I will but as thou will.
By doing this you are not leaning on your own understanding but acknowledging God and allowing Him to give you His best option.
John 15:7
If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
In my opinion there are 2 ways of submitting our will to God:
You acknowledge God’s superiority and allow Him to choose on your behalf (proverbs 3:6).
You abide in God, or obey His commandments and follow His instructions and He will grant the desires of your heart (psalm 37:4)
Pray For God’s Will To Be Done
Matthew 26:39
And He went a little farther, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O my father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.
The verse above is a prayer Jesus prayed just before he was arrested and crucified. Even though, He was also god and could have refused the father’s request, He submitted His will to the father and allowed the Father’s will to be done. This is an example every Christian should follow.
2 Samuel 10:12
Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the lord do that which seemeth Him good.
“ ……………. And the Lord do that which seemeth Him good”
That should be every Christian’s attitude when we come before god with our requests. Pray for His will to be done in every situation because His will or plan is much better for you than any dream you have for yourself.
Study the Word
Psalm 119:11
Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.
You can hide the word of God in your heart only when you have read it several times, meditated on it and memorized it.
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, needeth dividing the word of truth.
The Good News Translation of this verse says:
Do your best to win full approval in God’s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his worker who is not ashamed of his work, one who correctly teaches the message of God’s truth.
Another translation says; carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The emphasis here is
“carefully study’ when you study the word of God carefully, you win God’s approval and you can use the word appropriately. You know where to turn to. For Example, when your Christian life becomes monotonous and you lose your love for the things of God. In such times you can turn to Isaiah 40:31. It says; “they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength ……………….
It shows you what to do “wait on the Lord” meaning spend time studying the word, fasting and praying and God will renew your strength or give you fresh energy to live and work for Him.
Conclusion
Each day, your prayer in the morning and evening should be:
“order my steps in your word Lord”
Meditate on the words of this Sunday school song:
