The Faithful God, Which Keepeth Covenant
The Faithful God, Which Keepeth Covenant
By Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
Know therefore that the Lord thy god, He is God, the faithful god, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and leep His commandments to a thousand generations.
The Message Bible Version of Deuteronomy 8:9 says
Know this God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon, He keeps His covenant of loyal love with those who love Him and observe His commandments for a thousand generations.
The Common English Bible /Apocrypha translates Deuteronomy 7:9 as
Know now then that the Lord your God is the only God/ He is the faithful God, who keeps the covenant and proves loyal to everyone who loves Him and keeps His commands – even to the thousandth generation’
An important word that runs through all the three translations “covenant’ what is a covenant ? A covenant is simply an agreement between two individuals or parties.
In biblical terms it is an agreement between God and His people, in which God makes promises ot this people and, usually requires certain conduct from them. In the Old Testament God made agreements with Noah, Abraham and Moses.
Noah’s Story
In Noah’s story time there was so much wickedness in the world that God decided in Genesis 6:7 that And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
So God destroyed everything apart from the remnant of humans (Noah’s family) beasts and every other living thing that was kept in the ark.
After the flood that destroyed everything subsided God felt sorry for what He did and said in Genesis 8:21
… and the Lord said in His heart, I will not again curse the ground anymore for man’s sake (includes women and children) for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from His youth; neither wil I again smite any more everything living , as I have done.
That is why in spite of all the wickedness and sin in the world today, God has kept His covenant with Noah. The world has not been destroyed God has kept His covenant to the thousandth generation and more.
Abraham’s Story
God promised Abraham in Genesis 17:14 that
As for me, behold my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
Abraham did not live to see this promise fulfilled fully but through his sons Ishmael and issac, he became the father of the Israelites and those countries and people in the Middle-East .
God’s promise to His people now
The “new covenant “ with this people now or the new agreement God has made with mankind (new covenant) is based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The concept of a new covenant originated with the promise of Jeremiah that God would accomplish for His people what the old covenant had failed to do.
This can be found in Jeremiah, 31:31-34
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers by the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of Egypt….
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those dyas, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they shall be my people And they shall teach no more… for they shall all know me….
God has done exactly as He promised in he time of the Prophet Jeremiah He has put in every human a “void” that can be only be satisfied by turning to God and something.
Christians are supposed to spread the gospel but even before we reach out with the gospel people are filled with a longing or yearning that can only be satisfied by God.
God has kept this covenant to the thousandth generation and more
