Sin
Sin
By: Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
Google defines sin as an immoral act considers to be a transgression against divine law. I will define sin as disobedience to the commands of God. There are two major types of sin;
Sin of commission
Sin of omission
Sins of commission are those sinful actions that are proactively done. Humanity’s first sin was a sin of commission. God forbade the eating of a certain fruit (Genesis 2:16-17). Adam and Eve knew God’s command and disobeyed anyway (Genesis 3:16). they took action to commit a sinful act.
When King David committed adultery and then had Uriah killed to cover up, both were sins of commission (2 Samuel 11)
We are all guilty of sins of commission. We all commit intentional sin by acting in ways God has forbidden.
We also commit unintentional sin in our ignorance of God’s standard (Acts 3:12, 1 peter 1:14, Leviticus 4:13-14).
I will now quote and explain the verses listed above and comment on them.
Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eye’s, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit there of, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.
The verse above brings out different dimensions of sin and how the devil deceived us. The major thing he does is to attack our senses. Sense of sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing.
In the verse quoted he used the sense of sight first, when Eve saw how delicious and appetizing the fruit looked, she was willing to disobey God. Then the evil one completed the move with the sense of hearing, he said the fruit would make one wise, so she ate the fruit and gave the husband as well.
Most of the time a combination of the senses are used. For example, to convince you to fornicate, he will use your sense for sight, hearing and taught. Be very careful about doing whatever your sense tells you. Always assess how you feel in the light of God’s word before you take any action.
Acts 3:17
Friends, I realized that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance.
The deceiver always acts on your ignorance. He will do all he can to prevent you from reading the bible in order to know what God wants you to do. If the Israelites in Jesus’s time had read the prophecy made about Jesus, they would not have done some of the things they did.
1 Peter 1:14
Us obedient children, fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance.
This verse also talks about how our ignorance of the command laws of God in His word can lead us to sin. Cultivate the habit of studying the word of God on a daily basis.
Leviticus 4:13-14
And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done some what against any of the commandment of the Lord concerning things which should not be done, are guilty when the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation.
The passage above talks about sin committed in ignorance. Ignorance does not justify sin because God has not put all the commandments and laws in His word. He expects all of us to study and know what to do at each point in time.
He also makes us aware of what we should not do. If we go ahead to do what He has said we should not do, then we commit the sin of commission and will suffer the penalty if we do not repent and ask for forgiveness.
Sin of commission
Sins of commission are those in which we knew we should have done something good but refuse (James 4:17). In other words, a sin of commission is a sin committed because of neglecting to do what is right. They are good works left undone. works that God expect us to do, but we do not do them. Omission is willful disobedience.
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus said that Christians are the “salt of the earth”. (Matthew 5:13-16).
1 John 3:17-18 also reminds us that, “whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide In him?
God blesses us so we can bless other people. Therefore, if we keep all the good things God gives us to ourselves we are living in sin. If you know you have to give the poor and needy, the church and other foundations that help the disabled e.t.c then you are committing the sin of omission (knowing what to do and not doing it).
James 4:17
Therefore, to him that knowest to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
The verse above, confirms the last statement made on the sin of omission.
Conclusion
A detailed description has been given on what sin is. Study it carefully and ask God to give you grace and strength to obey all His commands.
