Only Believe
By Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, be not afraid, only believe.
The Message Bible
Translation of the verse above says:
Jesus overheard what they were talking about and said to the leader,
Don’t listen to them, just trust me.
To trust in the Lord means more than believing in who He is and what He says, the word here for trust can also mean to have confidence in having confidence in something means having assurance that leads to action. Trust in the Lord is a faith that lets us boldly serve.
Trusting in God is like “Throwing all caution to the wind’ in challenging situations where the thing that can save you.
Like Queen Esther said in Esther 4:16 she will take the risk of going to the king to seek salvation for the Jews even though it was likely to backfire.
The message in the key verse is that when all hope is lost trust in God (only believe).
Trusting in God involves!
- Not counting on your own knowledge and abilities
Proverbs 3:5-6
Philippians 4:13
- Thanking God for the victory in advance
Isaiah 12:4-5
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Not counting on your own knowledge and abilities
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
As human we are quick to turn to previous ways of solving or resolving issues. For example, you say, when I got a cold last time, the doctor gave me vitamin c and paradol. Let me try it again this time before going to the hospital.
People in the medical field will tell you are self-medicating or applying self-medication. Which is dangerous, this time the cold may have other underlying symptoms.
This is not acceptable in Christendom too. God may have directed you the first time to do something which worked. But this time, the problem might have other dimensions. Talk to God through prayer before attempting to solve any problem, physical, spiritual or emotional.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Always remember that it is only through the power and strength of God that you can do all things successfully.
Being still (not fretting or worrying)
Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the healthen, I will be exalted in the earth.
This verse re-emphasizes, that God is God, He can prove Himself by moving on your behalf in any situation, therefore there is no need to fred or worry. Fretting and worrying increases our fear and cripples us, preventing us from acting wisely.
Philippians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding shall keep your heart and minds in Christ Jesus.
Acceding to the passage above, instead of fretting and worrying we should learn to hand over our burdens and challenges to God through prayer and thanks giving. When we do this God will give us peace that transcends all human understanding.
Thanking God in advance for the victory
Isaiah 12: 4-5
And in that day shall ye say, praise the Lord, call upon His name, declare His name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His name is exalted.
Sing unto the Lord;
For He hath done excellent
Things: this is known in all the earth
Praise and thanksgiving activates the power of God to move on our behalf. Although, your circumstances may be below your expectation keep thanking God for
- Open doors
- Favour with God and man
- Blessings in abundance
When you do this faithfully and sincerely God will make a way and give you victory over your circumstances.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
It is God’s will that we rejoice even in adversity not for our misfortunes but for the victory that He will give us.
Learn to praise and thank God in good and in bad times.
Only believe and trust God and all will be well
Meditate on the words of this hymn
- Through the love of God our savior all will be well.
Free and changeless is His favour all, all is well
Precious is the blood that healed us
Perfect is the grace that sealed us.
Strong the hand stretched
Forth to shield us
All must be well.
- We expect a bright tomorrow all will be well
Faith can say through days of sorrow,
All, all is well
On our Father’s love relying
Jesus every need supplying
In our living, in our dying
All must be well
