Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God and believe also in me
The verse quoted above were words Jesus spoke to His disciples
He knew the time for His death and resurrection was drawing near. And not long after His resurrection He will ascend to His Father in heaven
He was preparing the disciples for the time , He will not be available to guide and direct them physically as He has been doing all along.
The disciples needed encouragement and assurance
1. Jesus had been working closely with the disciples.
– They always depended on His encouragement , direction and reassurance
– He had only sent them on assignment once on their own
2. They were not very successful on their own.
3. He needed to prepare them well because this time He was not coming back to them
4. The story of how Jesus sent out His disciples can be found in Matthew 10
What lessons can we learn from the disciples experience on their own?
1. Jesus gave His disciples very concrete directions on what to do during their first missionary journey
– If they are not accepted in a place they should move to the next place
a) Which is an indication that rejection in ministry should not stop or discourage your ministry
2- He also directed them to accept anything that was offered to help them Minister
a) An indication that lack or hardship in ministry should not discourage or stop your ministry
3.Every christian should study Matthew 10 as a point of reference for ministry or witnessing
– It clearly spells out the dos and don’t in ministry
Conclusion
1. In spite of the directions Jesus gave the disciples were not able to fully fulfill their ministry
2. That is why He had to emphasize in John 14:1 that they need not fret or worry about the assignment He had given them
2. All they need to do is to trust in God and Jesus
– For He is the way the truth and the life….. ( John 14:6)
