JESUS DELIVERS A DEMON POSSESSED MAN
JESUS DELIVERS A DEMON POSSESSED MAN
BY EVANGELINE UNITY ESAABA FOLSON
Mark 5:1-5
And they came over unto the other side, unto the country of the Gadarenes.
And when He was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
Mark 5:7-13
For He said unto him, come out of the man, thou unclean Spirit.
And He asked him, what is thy name? And he answered, saying, my name is Legion: for we are many.
And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
And all the devils besought Him, saying, send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
And forthwith Jesus have them leave. And the unclean Spirits went out, and entered into the swine, and the herd ran violently down on steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand) and were choked in the sea.
Mark 5:19-20
Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath compassion on thee.
And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him.
The whole story of Jesus delivering the demon possessed man can be found in Mark 5:1-20
Excerpts have been taken from the account to describe
• The nature and operation of demons
• How they can be cast out
• What one must do after he has been delivered from demon possession.
THE NATURE AND OPERATION OF DEMONS
MARK 5:1-5
Demons are very violent and destructive. The Apostle Mark tells us that the man was so violent that no man could tame him.
Even when he was locked and bound with fetters and chains, he plucked them asunder or he broke the chains and fetters with immense strength.
We are also told that, night and day he was crying and cutting himself with stones. This confirms that demons are very destructive. They had completely destroyed the man. He has been cut-off from his family and friends and cast out of his city. He was also cutting himself and would eventually have been killed by the unclean Spirits or demons.
The man had a terrible life, ruled by evil Spirits, but when he met with Jesus, Jesus turned everything around. Jesus turned the man’s sadness into great joy. This happened because Jesus is immeasurably more powerful than the devil and his demons.
MARK 5:8-13
The evil spirits were controlling the man. When Jesus spoke to the man, the evil spirit answered. He said his name was legion. Legion is a military word. In the Roman army, a legion was a group of up to 6,000 soldiers. We are not told if they were 6,000 demons but we are told they are many.
Every time Jesus meets a demon, it knows who Jesus is. John 2:19 says, you believe there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that. And they tremble!
Jesus commanded the demons to leave the man and directed them into a herd of swine.
One thing you should know before attempting to cast out any demon is you should be born again and you should know who the Lord is and what He can do if you exercise your faith and believe without any doubt that he can deliver the demon possessed person.
WHAT MUST WE DO AFTER BEING DELIVERED
MARK 5:19-20
Stories have been told of people being re-possessed by even more powerful demons after being delivered form demon possession.
In Mark 5:19 Jesus directs the man He delivered to go and tell his friends of the great things the Lord has done in his life. That is, He should testify and witness to win souls for the Lord.
This is very important. There is a proverb that says “Nature hates vacuum or empty space”.
Furthermore Matthew 12:43-45 says:
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest and findeth none.
Then he saith, I will return into my home from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept and tarnished.
Then goeth he, and tcometh with himself, seven other spirits, more wicked than himself, and they entered and dwelleth there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
If you are delivered and you do not get born again and become fulfilled with the Holy Spirit and working seriously for the Lord, the demons plus more wicked demons will return.
