Am I my brother’s keeper!!!
By Aunty Evangeline
Genesis 4:9
……am I my brother’s keeper?
Many people ask this question when they are asked to show concern to a brother or sister in trouble.
Matthew 25:40 says
Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me
In the verse above Jesus is trying to emphasize the need for us to show concern for one another. Why?
In the time of trouble, people are very vulnerable
– They become easily irritated even when you are trying to help them
How can we be our brother’s keeper? By
1. Bearing one another’s burden
– Proverbs 18:24
– Galatians 6:2
2. Not getting weary in doing good
– Ecclesiastes 11:1
– Galatians 6:9
1. Bearing one another’s burden
Proverbs 18:24
There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother ( paraphrased)
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burden and so fulfill the law of Christ
– According to the two verses above we are to
a) Stay close to a brother ( or friend) in trouble. ( Stick closer) , encouraging, reassuring and strengthening the friend in trouble.
b) Helping him or her come to terms with their problems and together find ways of resolving it ( bear one another’s burden)
2.Not getting weary in doing good
Ecclesiastes 11:1
Cast your bread upon the waters for you shall find it after many days
Galatians 6:9
Do not get weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not give up
– The two verses quoted immediately above present a simple message
a,) Do not get tired of being good to others even if they do not appreciate it
b) Keep being good whether the friend or friends reward you or do not reward
c) God Himself will find the best way of rewarding you appropriately
Conclusion
– God expects us to care for one another
– Let us do all we can to show love to one another
I end with Matthew 23:37-39
– Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor ( brother or friend) as yourself. ( paraphrased)
