I GIVE UNTO YOU POWER
I GIVE UNTO YOU POWER
By Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
10:10 behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
10;11 Notwithstanding in this, rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.
Power is defined in the Oxford English Minidictonary as:
- The ability to do something
- Influence and control
- Right or authority
- Strength or force
The passage above clearly states that God has given us power “to tread upon serpents and scorpions” This does not mean to walk on serpents and scorpions only but it is a figure of speech that means God has given us the ability to overcome the challenges and obstacles we encounter in our lives. This power has already been given to us. How do we activate (make it start working) it? We can do so by
- Confess it
Proverbs 18:21
Hebrews 10:23
- Exercising our faith
James 2:14-26
- Thanking God for victory
Psalm 34:1-3
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Confessing it
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
This verse assures us that if we confess what we need on the word of God we will receive it. For example, you have an assignment you are struggling with. You can confess that, father your words says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) therefore I can and will receive strength and wisdom from you to complete this assignment successfully. This confession can be made several times and you will receive the ability to finish your assignment.
Hebrews 10:23
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering for He is faithful that promised.
In the verse above, Christians are being advised not to be less definite or strong in their Christian faith.
Some translations replace the word “profession” with “confession”. We must “hold firmly to” or “hold fast to”.
Meaning we should not have doubts about our faith.
James 1:8 says
A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Exercising our faith
James 2:14-26
This is a very long passage; I will summarize what we can do or how we can exercise our faith:
- You must help the needy and afflicted not just by words of encouragement or prayer alone but give the material things needed, money, food, clothes, shelter, drugs.
- You must show your willingness to obey God’s command like Abraham did. He was ready to do whatever God asked no matter what cost.
Thanking God for Victory
Psalm 34:1-3
I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.
We must cultivate the habit of praising God at all times for the blessings He showers on us and for being the Almighty God who has all power and has given us His children, power to overcome our challenges and trials.
1 Thessalonians 5 :18
In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
According to this verse God desires that we thank Him at all times whether we are successful in our endeavors or we fail. Even if we are poor and not rich. Even though we have pressing needs etc.
Habakkuk 3:17-18 says:
Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruits be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut-off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stables. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The prophet paints the gloomiest picture in the passage above but he says in spite of everything he will still praise and thank the Lord. That should be the attitude of every Christian in the “high” and “low” points in your lives.
I will end with this song!
No weapon formed against you shall prosper
No tongue that is raised shall stand
You have authority I the name of Jesus
So no weapon formed against you shall prosper
No tongue that is raised Shall stand
