FOR MY YOKE IS EASY
By Evangeline Esaaba Folson
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
The New International Readers vision is Serving me is easy and my burden is light
Just like the translation above says serving God is easy but most people think otherwise.
They think that there are too many rules and regulations in the bible for Christians to follow
There is the
- Ten commandment
(Deuteronomy 5:6-21)
- The Lord’s Prayer
(Matthew 6:9-14)
- The law on forgiveness
Forgive 70 x 7 times (Matthew 18:21-25)
- The law on Love
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
On the surface, the commands and laws above seem too much for one person to obey. But the truth is if you obey all of them, you will not get into trouble with
- The laws of your land
- The laws of your employers
- The laws of the church
- You will have no trouble with your loved ones
TEN COMMANDMENTS
- Thou shall have no other gods before me
- Thou shalt not take the name of thy God in vain
- Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee
- Honor thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee
- Thou shalt not kill
- Neither shalt thou commit adultery
- Neither shalt thou steal
- Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor
- Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor’s wife
- Neither shalt thou covert or desire neighbor’s house, fields or his male servant or his female servant, nor his ox or his ass or anything.
These were the first commandment God gave the Israelite as they journeyed through the desert on their way to the promise land.
They were to obey all the ten commandment, even if you obey nine leave out only one, you have still not fulfilled His commands.
When Jesus came, He summarized the 10 into 2 major commandments.
Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy heart and with all thy mind and with all thy soul
And love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40)
If you Love your neighbor, you will not steal his property or covert his possessions or murder him /her.
THE LORDS PRAYER
Matthew 6:9-13
Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever Amen.
There are a few things the prayer above highlights
- We should learn to “hallow” or make holy the name of the Lord. In other words we should learn to worship the Lord each day
- We should seek for the will of God in all we do
- We should rely on the Lord for our “daily bread” or income to live on. We should restrain from engaging in shady deals.
- We should ask God for forgiveness when we err or disobey His commands and laws
- As we ask for forgiveness from God, we should also learn to forgive others who wrong us.
THE LAW OF FORGIVENESS
Matthew 18:21-25
Then came Peter to him, and said Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, until seven times; but until seventy times seven
Therefore, is the kingdom of heaven likening unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents but forasmuch as he had not to pay, his Lords commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children and all that he had and payment to be made.
Forgive seventy times seven times means, forgive always because it is impossible to keep an accurate record of how many people you forgive.
Seventy times seven is 490times, it might take you a whole lifetime to forgive so many times so try and forgive always and do not bother to count or keep record.
THE LAW ON LOVE
1 Corinthians 13;1-13
This is a very long passage and cannot be quotes fully.
To summarize, the passage says love is:
- Patient and Kind
- Not jealous or boastful
- Not arrogant or rude
- Not insisting on its own
- Love bears all things
- Love is true
This is a long, difficult list to obey. And when it comes to dealing with people it is very uncomfortable to obey all of them.
The passage ends with these word 1 Corinthians 13:13
And now abideth faith, hope charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity. So let the law of love be the greatest you obey. Because with love it is easy to forgive and obey all the other laws and meditate on the words of this song.
If I speak in the tongues of men or I speak in the tongues of angels and if I do not have love
I am nothing, I’m just a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal and if I give all I have And my body to be burnt, And if I do not have love, I am nothing, I am just a noisy gong Or a clanging cymbal
Love is always patient and kind
Love is never jealous or boastful
Love is never arrogant or rude
Not insisting on its own love bears all things
Oh yeah
Love is true
So faith, hope and love abide but the greatest of all this is love. Amen
