Will your anchor hold?
By Evangeline Unity Esaaba Folson
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, He swear by Himself.
14 Saying, surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiply I will multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife
For the Christian, one’s anchor must be the form witness of scripture grounded in faithful and prayerful devotion.
A “Spiritual anchor” is something that helps keep us grounded, and connected to what matters most, Jesus Christ who helps us cope with the challenges that life brings.
Life is full of ‘Ups and downs’ and ‘mountain tops’ and ‘valley’ experiences. You can make it through successfully if your anchor can hold through the storms of life. Jesus is our ‘Spiritual anchor’ when we trust Him completely then our anchor will hold in the storms of life. How can we trust the Lord completely?
- By not leaning on our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6, Matthew 6:13
- By delighting ourselves in the Lord. Psalm 37:4, John 15:7
- By committing our way to the Lord. Pslam 37:5, Philippians 4:13
By not leaning on our own understanding
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.
According to the verse above when you trust the Lord completely you do not rely on your own strength and wisdom (lean not on your understanding) But you look up to the Lord for direction in all you do (in all your ways acknowledge him and He shall direct thy paths)
In the passage quote above, Hebrews 6:15 says Abraham patiently endured till he obtained the promise. That is the attitude all Christians should have, wait patiently for the Lord to move on your behalf in spite of the chaos and difficulties around you (patiently endured) Doing this shows that you trust the Lord completely.
Matthew 6:13
And lead us not unto temptation but deliver us from evil: for thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory forever and ever Amen.
From the verse above, we can say trusting the Lord completely involves praying for deliverance from temptation and evil.
Why?
Temptation and evil are unpleasant situations. They come in various ways. Sometimes from areas where you least expect it. It takes the grace and mercy of God to be able to overcome all temptations and evil.
For instance, your relation is seriously sick, a parent or a child. You need money urgently for medical attention can you reject money from a benefactor who promises you millions of money in exchange for telling lies to humiliate and destroy a man of God? You know it is wrong but your back is against the wall. Can you trust God to send money through another person who will not make unreasonable demands?
That is why we need to pray for deliverance from temptation and evil everyday as the Lord taught us in the prayer quoted above. And that is what will make your anchor hold in the storms of life.
By delighting ourselves in the Lord
Pslam 37:4
Delight thyself also in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desire of thine heart
To delight yourself in the Lord is to enjoy serving God and obeying His commandment. You do this because you trust the Lord completely and you believe serving Him will help you become successful in all your endeavors.
John 15:7 says
If you abide in me and my word abide in you, ask whatever you will and it shall be done unto you.
The verse above means, if you obey God’s words then he will grant you the desires of your heart and your anchor will hold in the storms of life.
By committing your ways to the Lord
Psalm 37:5
Commit thy way unto the Lord trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.
Trusting in the Lord involves committing your way to Him or seeking direction through His word and through pray for everything you do no matter how small or big the project is.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This means Christ is the source of your strength for all you do. Without Christ you cannot do anything.
Christ is your anchor and He sees you through the storms of life.
Meditate on the words of this hymn:
Will your anchor hold
In the storms of life?
Where the clouds unfold
Their winds of strive
When the strong tides lift
And the cable strain will your anchor drift or firm remain?
Chorus
We have an anchor
That keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure
While the billows roll
Fastened to the rock
Which cannot move
Grounded firm and deep
In the saviors’ love
