Thy will be done
THY WILL BE DONE
BY EVANGELINE UNITY ESAABA FOLSON
MATTHEW 6: 10
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
MATTHEW 26: 39
And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.
MATHEW 6: 10 is part of the Lord’s prayer, the prayer Jesus taught His disciples. The verse indicates that God would love that His will is done here on earth as it is done in heaven.
REVELATION 4: 9-11 gives us an idea of what happens in heaven. It says:
And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to Him that sat on the throne, who liveth forever and ever,
The four and twenty elders fall down before Him that liveth forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, say, thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure, they are and were created.
According to this passage, there is continuous worship and thanksgiving in heaven by heavenly beings.
I believe this is what God desires from His children here on earth. It gives us a glimpse of what we will be doing in heaven – praising and worshiping God always.
Let us learn and cultivate the habit of praising and worshiping God. This can be done by:
- Getting praise and worship CDs recordings on the internet. We can learn as many songs as possible, both local and foreign.
- Apart from learning the songs, we can also learn the ‘art’. Watch how the people in the video recordings behave and imitate them in our praise and worship.
- Study passages and verses in the bible on praise and worship. Especially the Psalms.
- Churches and Christian organizations can organize pure praise and worship programs like “Adom Praise”, the worship, or Tehillah Experience by Ohemaa Mercy. We need more of those. These are examples from Ghana, other countries would have their own versions.
- In these pandemic times, we could have an international virtual praise and worship programs, with representatives from different parts of the world.
MATHEW 26:39 is a fulfillment of a plan God revealed through His Prophets in
Isaiah 7:14 and Isaiah 53:3 – 5.
Isaiah 7:14 says:
Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
ISAIAH 53:3-5
He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him, he was despised, and we esteemed Him not.
Surely, he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes, we are healed.
The first quotation, ISAIAH 7:14 foretells the birth of Christ and how unique it would be born of a virgin. It is only God who can make this possible. But Mary gave birth by the conception of the Holy Spirit.
Then the passage in ISAIAH 53:3-5 foretells how Jesus would be treated by men and what His cruel treatment and death would do for mankind.
In MATHEW 26:39, Jesus is on the verge of going through the suffering prophesied by Isaiah. He knew it would not be easy but then the will of God must be fulfilled.
The lessons that can be learned from Mathew 26:39 are that:
- God’s will is superior, it overrides everything. (MATHEW 26:42).
- Fulfilling the will of God confirms prophecy (MATHEW 26:18)
- Fulfilling the will of God brings victory and gives us power. (Matthew 28: 18)
GOD’S WILL IS SUPERIOR, IT OVERRIDES EVERYTHING
Mathew 26: 42
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. Jesus was the beloved and only begotten Son of God, yet when it comes to doing the will of God, He had to put aside His (Jesus) godly powers and succumb to the will of God the Father. God’s will has to be done always. His will overrides everything. Jesus said “thy will be done” even if it meant suffering greatly, he had to sacrifice and do it.
FULFILLING GOD’S WILL CONFIRMS PROPHESY
MATHEW 26:56
But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples fled.
One of the scriptures being referred to here is the passaged quoted from Isaiah 53:3-5. God’s will have to be done to fulfill prophecy. The word of God must be fulfilled because He is not a man that He should lie. What He says He will do. He cannot refuse to do what He says He will do; He cannot go back on His word even if it would cost Him dearly. Like having to sacrifice His only begotten Son.
The sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary’s cross was not easy for Jesus as well as God the Father. He loved His son dearly and it was difficult to forsake Him and make Him Suffer.
If God did all this to save you and me, then we can be sure that He does all He has to, to make His will fulfilled in our lives by bestowing on us all the blessings He has promised in His word (when we obey His commands). He will ensure that He makes us what He wants us to be.
FULFILLING THE WILL OF GOD BRINGS US VICTORY AND GIVES US POWER
MATHEW 28:18
And Jesus came and spoke unto them saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and on earth.
This verse was Jesus parting words to his disciples after His death and resurrection just before He ascended into heaven.
When Jesus fulfilled the will of God in His suffering, death, and resurrection then God gave Him all power in heaven and on earth.
When we also allow the will of God to be fulfilled in our lives we will receive the blessings of God that will make us prosper and become victorious Christians.
CONCLUSION
The message being given in this article is that:
- We should seek the will of God for our lives. We can find this in His word and through the leading of the Holy Spirit that lives in us after we receive the gift of Salvation.
- When we find out what His will is, we should strive towards fulfilling His will completely no matter what it takes.
- As we fulfill His will, He will bless us and make us prosperous giving us victory in all we do.
