FIND REST IN THE LORD
FIND REST IN THE LORD
BY EVANGELINE UNITY ESAABA FOLSON
MATHEW 11:28-30
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
The fact that verse 28 says “ all ye that labour and are heavy ladened” implies that Jesus knows that at some point in our lives we will face challenges and obstacles. He also knows that we would need to find rest in Him.
Then, He says in verse 29 that we should take His yoke upon us and learn of Him”. This suggests that we should surrender our lives to Him, study His word and obey it. When we do this we will find rest and comfort for our souls.
There are 3 questions we need to answer:
How do we surrender our lives to Him? Romans 10:9-10, Revelations 3:20
How do we study the word? Joshua 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:15
How do we obey His word? Psalm 119:105, John 15:7, Mathew 22 : 37 – 39
HOW DO WE SURRENDER OUR LIVES TO HIM
ROMANS 10:9-10
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart, man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
According to this passage, salvation can be achieved through two major steps:
Confess the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Master of your life.
Believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead to get us saved and reconciled to God.
REVELATIONS 3:20 SAYS
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
This verse says, God is standing at the door of our hearts already knocking because He wants to have a relationship with us and save us. All we need to do is to accept the gift of salvation and invite Him into our hearts through prayer.
JOSHUA 1:8
This book of law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein, for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous then thou shalt have good success.
The verse above directs us to study the bible or the word thoroughly. Read it day and night, think deeply about what we study, determine how to apply it to our lives and memorize it (Meditate on the word of God).
2 Timothy 2:15 says
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
We are to study the word of God, so well that we know the word to help us in whatever situation we find ourselves in.
For example, as young people, when we are thinking of choosing a life partner, we should remember that Proverbs 31:30 says we should not make our choice based primarily on a person’s looks because beauty is vain and it is usually lost as a person grows old. We should look for someone who fears the Lord.
Another example for the youth is their emotions, 2 Timothy 2:22 says, flee youthful lusts.
There are several other directions from the bible not only for the youth but for all Christians. We need to study the word well to know all these words of wisdom from the bible.
PSALM 119:105
Thy word is thy lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
In order to obey the commands of the Lord, the bible should be our guide. Whenever we need direction or advice we should turn to the bible first. It has everything we need.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, there is nothing new under the sun, everything that happens today has occurred before.
JOHN 15 :7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
We should obey every commandment of the Lord. The word should be part of us it should be in our minds and in our hearts, directing us in whatever we do.
MATHEW 22:37 – 39
Jesus said unto him, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
These two commandments given by Jesus summarizes the ten commandments. If you love God you will not worship other gods or idols and you will not take His name in vain.
If you love your neighbour you will not steal from him, commit adultery with his/her spouse, murder him, bear false witness against him or covet his belongings.
CONCLUSION
If you want peace, comfort and rest in life, surrender your life to God, learn and obey His commandments.
When you do this, you will have no trouble with God or your neighbour and you will live a prosperous life and have good success. All will be well with you.
